Ideas as to how to attach and composition beads with my designs.

As to who my designs would be aimed at, I think they fit the age category between 18-23 due to the colourful floral prints, and also the beading accessories contained. To get a understanding into this, I Asked a number of relatives and friends within this age group and the majority did say they would wear a number of the garments designed, and do work well as prints. Before starting the design process, I did ask a number of young girls as to what they like and would be happy to see within a garment. Many said a quite 'colourful' and 'quirky' colour scheme to the designs, also quite a bold, strong colour scheme taking place. Another request people said, was for the floral theme to have a contempory style to the prints, in which I took comments onboard when it came to the designs.

I’m pleased with the designs and illustrations I’ve created as I’ve actually learnt a lot doing these. Each time I’m learning new and more skills on Photoshop and I have realised it really is just about playing and experimenting- trail and error! As to how my project is sustainable, I suppose I have a number of reasons and ideas for this. Firstly, I would be printing designs onto net curtains as I said near to the beginning, as I do believe it would create a unusual print, and isn’t this what makes people want to keep certain clothes when it comes to fashion???!!!!
Also these would be recycled then re printed on. Another is the fact how many of my images have small elements/detailing contained which I aimed for. The reason for this is due to the fact how when designs have quite a small printed image, the pattern cutting can be placed in any direction and also not much fabric should be wasted for this. Also with each garment that would be sold, there is a mini packet of beads included, so customers can attach these in their own time, to any section of the prints contained. I do believe this would make the garment more sustainable as consumers will play a role in the making, and as for this reason they would keep it special to them as their work and effect has gone into it. There is also a second option to this. If customers don’t want to attach due to this being time consuming, then also on offer is an alternative, ready striped beads so they just tack areas to keep these attached and held down. It simply depends on the individual!!!!

After my designs, I then applied these onto garments to see how they would work as a printed fabric design. I think my designs look quite realisic and i think maybe they would work as garments if they was to be printed.

These are my designs I created using Photoshop, experimenting and using a few techniques such as repeat pattern, over laying images, changing the hue/ saturation etc. I think the more detailed and over laying images work better as a design as it has that quality detailed patterns contained, and also when applying my designs onto garments I think this shows.

Although my design and thoughts were on the way, I needed to come up with ideas why my work would be sustainable. I thought about reprinting onto old existing garments or onto existing curtains which I liked this idea but needed expanding more. I like the idea with using old curtains and working with the design/ print that was already on this, maybe by reprinting my design on top and even with the old print showing through, I thought this would add to the design.
I also had a idea of using recycled old net curtains as these were a trend for the past I suppose you could say, so as people no longer are using these, why can't fashion make a use for them??!!
I thought more about this idea and as net curtains have quite an open design, I thought doubling up the net would make it more realistic to work with and the print design would be more noticeable. I know even doubled up won’t close the entire surface, but with the print disappearing in areas could really work for the design and give a more unique effect.

Here are some of my drawings and paintings I completed in which then to take them into Photoshop to start creating some design ideas and really just to experiment and see where that takes me. As I love drawing, I thought this would be a great way to express myself through my work and to use this to my advantage. Also I thought by doing this my passion for drawing would be expressed through designs and maybe this would show.

Noki have produced some fantastic sustainable and recyclable garments using old clothing and changing either the shape or design of these to give a more contempory/ unique fashion trend. I like their extreme way of re designing garments as I think it brings a new light/ dimension into the product, which I think does give a statement and ideas for generations to take recycling and re using old garments which can still be fashionable even now with a bit of further design included or tweaking somehow.

Here are some drawings I sketched from visiting the Whitworth art gallery based on William Morris’s printed fabrics, expressing my own style of mark making and use of line. I absolutely loved his prints, it was really inspiring for me to see such works and to go away and think about applying this type of quality into my own work.

William Morris

As I wanted a floral theme, I looked into William Morris to see what kind of works he had produced, also to get inspiration which I could apply into my own work with this project. I loved his prints due to the designs being quite expressive in terms of mark making contained, which I have that quality in drawings as I love to explore use of mark making, line, and tone to express myself through this. Also I think drawings’ containing these bring prints to a whole new dimension and changes the quality to the design.

For this sustainable project I decided to base my theme and designs on florals. I wanted to see the different type of designs I could create as I think this is a type of fashion that is included within every season’s trend.
To get myself started, I looked into slow fashion to see what this term actually meant. I suppose the start is what we consider to be ''environmentally friendly''.
